True Stories: Belstaff US Men’s Manager Marc Gammiero

January 28, 2016

With almost 100 years outfitting motorsports enthusiasts – and more recently, style mavens – in innovative outerwear, the iconic British luxury brand Belstaff defines the category of rugged ready-to-wear. We chatted with US Men's Manager Marc Gammiero about his passion for retail, fit and personal style and how the ever-changing industry needs to adapt to keep up... a challenge of which this fashion-forward heritage brand has done an exceptional job.

How did you get started in the fashion business and how has the industry changed?
I was a retail manager for about 10 years before I got into wholesale, and I can say that in that time the industry has changed dramatically as online shopping has really created a new platform for consumers today. Customers now have access to stores and brands that they didn’t a decade ago, and it’s made it a more competitive landscape.

What makes for a perfect fit? Which items do you turn to again and again?
I think fit is a personal preference, and everyone has different criteria. For me, the perfect fit is whatever I’m comfortable in that makes me feel confident about what I’m wearing. Trends are also constantly changing our fit preferences, as we saw this year with the growth in oversized tees, tapered leg denim and even oversized outerwear.

How would you describe your style? What inspires you to do the work you do?
I would say that my style is definitely a bit more trend driven than classic. I’m constantly inspired by the evolving trends and I’m always looking for what’s next. I love being a part of creating assortments for my clients, and knowing that I had some small imprint and or contribution to what people are buying in their stores.

What some of the mistakes people make when shopping for clothes?
I think the two main mistakes people make when shopping for clothes are being too impulsive, and when you need someone else's opinion to make a purchase for yourself. I think we all need to learn to understand our style and learn to be confident in it.

What do you see for the future of fashion – particularly related to the way people shop online?
I think we’ll continue to see growth in the men’s market. The way men have began to shop is something we’ve never seen before in this industry and I think it will only continue to grow and become more important. Online shopping will continue to grow in importance, as customers are becoming more savvy, gaining more accessibility, and I think brick-and-mortar retail is going to have some challenges as they face these changes. The market is constantly evolving, and I think we’ll continue to see more creative ways to make shopping easier for the consumer.
