True Stories: Dorian Lightbrown of NIC+Zoe

After designing in Paris for years, RISD graduate Dorian Lightbown created her own label NIC+ZOE (lovingly named after her two children). As one of our beloved brand partners, Dorian took the time to speak with with True Fit about her legacy creating clothes that are meant to fit and flatter – creating styles that are as chic as they are comfortable.

How did you get started in the fashion business and how has the industry changed since?

After studying Apparel Design at Pratt Institute and RISD, I learned the industry by being a designer and product manager for The Limited in knitwear.  After working there for many years and with a few other companies, I decided to start NIC+ZOE.  I think most importantly, while the industry has changed over the years, the customer has not.  Women want to look and feel good in what they wear

A perfect fit, for me, has to do with proportions and comfort.  Personally, I love layers and wear them every day!

How would you describe your style? What inspires you to do the work you do?

With every collection, I love orchestrating how it will all go together.  From fabrics, textilesprints and color, it’s a challenge but it’s something that I look forward to every day.

Buying something that doesn’t fit!

What’s your style mantra this season? Which pieces/silhouettes are your must-haves?

I think that there are a lot of great new shapes in pullovers. Lengths are varied and I’m looking forward to trying a crop top by working it over a layer.

Do you live by Dorian's layering lifestyle? What's your favorite way to pile on style?
