"When I go shopping it's really hard to find a size that fits me" she said. Chrissy says that on any given shopping day, the clothes that fit her can range from size XS to 14-16, making it a challenge to find any consistency, and remain confident to boot.

To try and make some sense of it all, Chrissy, who identifies as a size 12, recently took a trip to four retailers - Old Navy, Topshop, Forever 21 and H&M - to test how clothes fit across not only the different brands, but different styles within each store as well.

"It doesn't matter what size you are, it doesn't get easier." - Chrissy Mahlmeister

Filled with the highs and lows that come from hopping in and out of fitting rooms, Chrissy decided to get to the bottom of the insanity sizing and got in touch with True Fit Co-founder Jessica Murphy to talk to her about what is going on with this fit conundrum.

"Once upon a time we had consistency"

Chrissy asked Jessica "In your experience when you look across mall clothing brands, is their sizing consistent?" Jessica's answer? "Absolutely not." Jessica explains that "Brands cater to who they think their customer is. When they assign a Medium to the label, that's not trying to adhere to some standard of what "Medium" is. That is literally saying this is the middle of the size scale for who I think my customer is."

So what is a shopper to do about size?

Jessica's advice to Chrissy and all shoppers alike is to "get familiar with the styles that work well with your body shape." Shoppers should care less about the size and more about how comfortable and confident they feel in that piece of clothing. "The good mark of 'does it work for you' is when you put it on and you look in the mirror and you think 'yea, I look good!'"
